As we get older, it becomes increasingly difficult to see up close. Our eyes need to adjust every time to change between seeing close up and far away. This natural adaptation by the human lens is also called accommodation. The human lens loses elasticity with age which makes it more difficult to accommodate, reducing the sharpness of the image of the objects close up. This visual impairment called presbyopia.
Starting at the age of 40, this reduced accommodation capacity forces us to hold objects further away to see them better. Daily activities such as reading, writing or working on a computer become increasingly difficult and require the use of glasses. Some individuals, again mainly due to the effects of ageing, may also develop cataracts, which is when the opacity of the human lens makes images cloudy, distorted and foggy.
PhysIOL, an innovative Belgian manufacturer of intraocular lenses, has developed a solution for people suffering from presbyopia or cataract. FineVision is a “trifocal” intraocular lens which is to be implanted through eye surgery.
This IOL produces satisfying and predictable visual performances by allowing the patient to become spectacle free for near, distant and intermediate vision.
With this trifocal lens, glasses are no longer necessary for:
- Reading, writing or performing any precision work
- Working on a computer or doing anything requiring good intermediate vision at distances of 40 cm to 1m
- For all daily activities that are easier or better without glasses, such as sports, going for walks, etcetera.
