ESAComp is software developed and supported by Componeering Inc., Finland, for analyzing and designing fiber-reinforced composites. Its scope ranges from conceptual and preliminary design of fiber-reinforced layered composite laminates structures to analyses of details of the mechanical and thermic properties. ESAComp is a stand-alone software tool, but thanks to its ability to interface with widely-used finite element software packages, it fits seamlessly into the design process. The comprehensive material database of ESAComp also forms the basis for design studies. ESAComp has a vast set of analysis capabilities for solid/sandwich laminates and for micromechanical analyses. It further includes analysis tools for structural elements: flat and curved panels, stiffened panels, beams and columns, bonded and mechanical joints.
The development work of ESAComp was initiated by the European Space Agency (ESA/ESTEC), who envisioned open software which would combine all necessary composites analysis and design capabilities under one unified user interface. The development was first conducted at Helsinki University of Technology (now Aalto University). The first official version, ESAComp 1.0, was released in 1998. In 2000, Componeering Inc. was established to overtake the ESAComp project. Although it originated in the aerospace field, ESAComp has been developed as a general tool for people dealing with composites, both in industry and in research.
