Fixtures on a carbon or composite structure

Technology need

Luggage carrier fixtures on a carbon-composite motorcycle frame

Summary of the technological need

Strong mounting accessories for a carbon composite motorcycle frame, without having to drill into the composite frame.

Background

NXT Motors has developed a fully electric, high-speed motorcycle based on monocoque carbon frame. The challenge is that in aftermarket often cases and bags are added to allow carrying luggage on the motorcycle for commuting purposes or even holiday travel. These cases / bags are added by means of fixed attachments that are drilled through the covers and fixed on the frame. As NXT Motors don’t have a frame and drill through the carbon frame is not recommended for reasons of chassis strength, we are looking for add-on fixtures on which cases/bags/luggage can be attached.

Traditionally all cases and luggage carriers are aftermarket, and non-OEM. We do not want to change that. The connection for each brand of luggage carriers might be different. Hence we pursue a basic fixture that can take every brands luggage carriers so that for NXT Motors the luggage will be fixed to the fixtures rather then on the frame for traditional motorcycles which are based on metal tube frame.

Application domains

mobility, manufacturing

Specifications

The fixture should:

  • Clamp on / around / under the rear end of NXT Motors’ carbon frame.
  • Allow attaching all available aftermarket luggage carriers.
  • Withstand high speeds on road. The motorbike’s top speed is 208 km/h. When luggage attached this might stick outside of the aerodynamics of the motorbike (with driver), so getting a potentially even higher pressure to withstand.
  • Withstand all weather conditions in spring, summer autumn and winter without losing any of its performance and withstanding corrosion.
