Technology need
Summary of the technological need
A technology to detect biofilms in production lines in the food and drink industry.
Background
Examples of biofilms include biofilm formation in tank and racking pipes in beer factories, on conveyor belts in shrimp factories, etc. The product might not be directly in contact with the biofilm on the latter case, but the biofilm can create bacterias that might contaminate the product via propagation in the air. The effect of this contamination is that it drastically reduces the lifetime of the shrimp, sometimes cutting it in half. At the beginning the biofilm is not visible and then becomes visible after a certain time.
Actual : for the moment, biofilms can be detected but often too late. And their content cannot be characterized. Thus the solution is to make a guess and to apply either a base or an acid solution to eradicate it. Or to apply an enzymatic solution.
Wanted : developing a device that is able to detect and characterize the biofilm. Being able to characterize the different biofilms measured. Make inspection at different points of the production line. In order to apply the correct treatment when needed.
